![]() ![]() I can tell you now that Stormbringer's 'real' being is related to other supernatural forces on another plane. ![]() Lucifer has also claimed to be one with the Black Sword. This is likely because in some cryptic way, the Black Sword and the Eternal Champion are one. ![]() Though the Black Sword is a being of Chaos, it seems to be an instrument of the Balance, akin to the Runestaff and the Horn of Fate. The Black Sword has been called by many names in its different manifestations across the Multiverse, including Stormbringer, Mournblade/Ravenbrand, Kanajana, the Cold Sword, the Dragon Sword, and Murakamo-No-Tsurugi (Japanese for Sword of the Gathering Clouds). It exists in the Higher Realms as creatures of Chaos, and can partially manifest as black-bladed swords or other weapons (such as Jerry Cornelius' Needle Gun or the Banning Gun) on the material plane. The Black Sword devours the souls of its victims, and can even kill gods. It has a will of its own and will often disobey the wishes of its wielder. The Black Sword is alive, fully sentient and malevolent. As the name suggests, it most often takes the form of a massive black runesword. It is the weapon of the Eternal Champion, but it is not always borne by him or her. The Black Sword is a cosmic archetype, able to exist in any universe in almost any form. ![]() ![]() ![]() Her eldest and heronly natural child is 19 and currently at university. John Mandel used these lines as an epigraph to her second novel, The Singer’s Gun (2010), a book haunted by 9/11. “We stand in need of something stronger now: the travel book you can read while making your way through this new, alarming world.” With tanks now standing guard at London’s Heathrow Airport, what was once an ordinary plane trip had acquired “an element of thoroughly unwanted suspense.” The usual reading material, Pye argued, would no longer do. ![]() Writing in The New York Times in June 2003, less than two years after the events of September 11 shattered the complacency with which many Americans conducted their lives, the British critic Michael Pye lamented an unlikely casualty of the new era: the ability to occupy ourselves with a superficial novel while sitting in an airport lounge or drifting at 30,000 feet. Jeanette’s insistence on listening to truths of her own heart and mind-and on reporting them with wit and passion-makes for an unforgettable chronicle of an eccentric, moving passage into adulthood. But as this budding missionary comes of age, and comes to terms with her unorthodox sexuality, the peculiar balance of her God-fearing household dissolves. Jeanette is a bright and rebellious orphan who is adopted into an evangelical household in the dour, industrial North of England and finds herself embroidering grim religious mottoes and shaking her little tambourine for Jesus. The most intriguing was the piece on the Buddy Deane show, the Baltimore-based 50s and 60s teen dance show (like Bandstand), written before he decided to use it as the basis for his film Hairspray.Grade: B/B- (the grade is somewhat lowered because the essays don't quite come together as an entire package because they were written for different sources, and some of them seem a little flat 20+ years later)Recommended: You would probably have to be a fan of Waters, or at least a fan of what he is obsessed with (fame, camp, transgressive films, white trash America) to appreciate this, but if you are, you probably will. This book is a collection of essays, most originally published elsewhere, about the various things he is obsessed with, and as one might imagine, some of them are rather strange (prison) and others seem more normal (Christmas) until you read how his obsessions play out. Despite the fact that I am not a huge fan of John Water's films (I'm actually completely uninterested in most of them), I love his writing, and I'm sort of weirdly in love with him, in the way that I think almost nothing would be more fun than to go be his neighbor or secretary or something like that. ![]() ![]() ![]() Praise for Six Dots: An inspiring look at a child inventor whose drive and intelligence changed to world-for the blind and sighted alike.- Kirkus Reviews Even in a crowded field, Bryant's tightly focused work, cast in the fictionalized voice of Braille himself, is particularly distinguished.- Bulletin, starred review This picture book biography strikes a perfect balance between the seriousness of Braille's life and the exuberance he projected out into the world.
